Sunshine

Iqra Choudhuri (Mongalkote)

My mother gave me a nickname when I was born. Sunshine is what she called me.
I adored it when I was younger but now fast forward to twenty years, I was at a party with my friends. My mother called me and I picked up at the first ring. She called me Sunshine, my friends heard it, everybody did. After that endless teasing I got back home. My mother again called me sunshine. I said stop calling me that. She said ” oh okay”. Fast forward ten years, my mother passed away, I found a letter in her almirah, it was by my mom.
” my father passed away when I was twelve, he used to call me his Sunshine, after that I never used the word sunshine. Fast forward twenty years you were born, I gave you that nickname. You have something sacred”
I read it over and over, it hit me like a punch in the gut ‘you had something sacred’.
Now my nickname is Sunshine.
